Part 1 is a basic sciences exam sat by doctors who stopped studying basic sciences years ago. It does not ask how you would manage a woman with pre-eclampsia. It asks which physiological change drives the rise in glomerular filtration in pregnancy, which vessel supplies a pelvic structure, or how a drug crosses the placenta.
That is why it feels unfamiliar even to doctors who are good at obstetrics. Ward experience helps, but it does not replace going back to the science.
Both papers are 100 single best answer questions in two and a half hours, and both count equally. That is 90 seconds a question, and a data interpretation stem can take 40 of them just to read. Candidates who have never practised under a clock lose marks to pacing rather than knowledge.
If you are still deciding which part to sit, start with the MRCOG overview.

Seats go first come, first served, and popular centres fill inside hours. Three things decide whether you get one.
First-time candidates send an attested copy of their medical degree, or a registration certificate that names the degree and university. A notary public, commissioner of oaths or embassy officer must attest it. A relative cannot, and neither can you. Merge everything into one PDF.
One form per sitting, every time, resits included. You can file it before your eligibility result arrives, so do not wait.
RCOG emails a booking link when the window opens. The search defaults to centres near your registered address, and seats are first come, first served.
Use the same name on your RCOG account as on the ID you will carry on the day. The College takes payment online when you book.

The fee follows the test centre, not where you live. Sitting in Lahore instead of Dubai saves £97. Centres in India add Indian GST.
Rupee figures are a guide only, converted at £1 = Rs 366.63 on 10 October 2026 and rounded to the nearest hundred. Your bank will apply its own rate and card charges on the day, so budget above the figure shown.

Ninety consistent minutes a day beats a planned four hours that happens twice a month. When you get a question wrong, write down why: a knowledge gap, a misread stem, or a rushed answer. Each has a different fix.
